UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I've had the hardest time getting my Windows users (technically proficient users who grew up with VAX.VMS systems) to abandon FTP and TELNET for SSH and SFTP/SCP. It's getting to the point where I'm getting seriously angry at them for being "stupid". With that little bit of complaint aside after speaking with one of my colleagues I was told that the reason for the rejection of SSH and SFTP is that they are not intuitive, much harder to configure, and FTP/TELNET "ain't broke". Short of some kind of security disaster, I don't think anyone is going to care about the security aspect of it. So, my thought turned to the "usability" aspect of these protocols. PuTTY (which is the only real free SSH client I'm aware of for Windows) has a very confusing interface for most Windows users. If it had a "wizard" interface for creating new connections and did away with the tree view in the left pane, it would probably be a little more "friendly". But, I'm no developer so right now the only real question I'm asking is whether or not there is another free SSH client for Windows with a better interface. WinSCP2 also has a pretty difficult interface for the average user. My thoughts are that if there was an SFTP/SCP plugin for Windows Explorer that made connecting to a remote system like "mapping a drive", people might find it more intiuitive. Once again though, I'm not a developer and I don't think anyone involved with the WinSCP2 project is likely to want to hear these suggestions. So... are there any alternatives to WinSCP2?

Well, if they can't figure out PuTTY, are you sure they are technically proficient?

As for SSH Windows clients, I use SecureCRT. Like ZOC too... you have to pay for them, but they are very simple to use. Data Fellows is decent too.

If you really want them to use ssh, and you have the clout, simply disable telnet/ftp on all boxes.

Another great way to generate interest in SSH, is snooping a couple of logins and passwds and show them to the big boss.
