Global substitution, every match of regular expression r in variable t is replaced by string s. The number of replacements is returned. If t is omitted, $0 is used. An & in the replacement string s is replaced by the matched substring of t. \& and \\ put literal & and \, respectively, in the replacement string.
Code:
gsub (/\|/, "\n" $1 ":")
r:  /\|/, a regex constant, value: | (needs to be escaped with \ as | has a special meeting in extended regex)
s:  string consisting of three substrings:
    "\n":  the <newline> char
    $1:  615213
    ":": the colon
t:  missing, thus operating on $0

The second is left to you as an exercise.

Hi

this is what i understand for second part.
Code:
 gsub ($1 ":", "& ")
   
  
r:  $1 ":"     -----à this is a regular expression 
  s:  “& “       -----à this is a string
   
  in this part of the gsub t is missing

however i am still not able to understand the working of ampersand .
