Post what you've tried. Did you replace -1 with the entire conditional above?

This is what I tried

Code:
awk '{print substr($0,1,8) sprintf("%04d", substr($0,9,4)-1501?48:1) substr($0,13)}' file

Code:
sed 's/^\(.\{8\}\)1501/\17/; s/^\(.\{8\}\)1453/\18/' file

Code:
awk '{print $9, $9-($10==1501?48:1)}' fil

Code:
  awk '{gsub("1501","1453",$9)}4'  infile >> outfile

Code:
awk '{sub("1501","1453",$9);print}' a1.txt

None of the above is replace the 1501 with 1453

Try:
Code:
awk '{s=substr($0,9,4); print substr($0,1,8) sprintf("%04d", s-(s==1501?48:1)) substr($0,13)}' file

or
Code:
gawk '{$2=sprintf("%04d", $2-($2==1501?48:1))}1' FIELDWIDTHS="8 4 999" OFS= file
