Help need to compare columns in files

Hi,

Below is my requirement

file1
Code:
id|cnt
1|1
2|2
3|3

file2
Code:
id_1|cnt_1
1|1
2|1
3|1

I want to compare cnt and cnt_1 columns, if they are differ then give the details
Am using below awk command, but the output is not as expected.
Code:
awk -F\| 'NR=FNR{a[$2}=$2,next}a[$2]!=$2{print "Different"}' file1 file2

output
======
Code:
Different
Different
Different
Different
Different
Different

it is to doing 1:n check, my requirement is it should do 1:1 check, so that the expected output will be as follows since differ in two records.
Code:
Different
Different

It would be more clear it will give more details as follows.
Code:
2|2 is Different from 2|1
3|3 is Different from 3|1

Someone please help me to achieve this, Thanks in advance..

Thanks
Rahul

Welcome grandhirahuletl,

Sorry to be awkward, but I have a few to questions pose in response first:-
  • Is this homework/assignment? There are specific forums for these.
  • What variations have you tried so far and is there any more script around this interpreting the output?
  • What output/errors do you get?
  • What OS and version are you using?
  • What are your preferred tools? (C, shell, perl, awk, etc.)
  • What logical process have you considered? (to help steer us to follow what you are trying to achieve)

There are probably many ways to achieve most tasks, so giving us an idea of your style and thoughts will help us guide you to an answer most suitable to you so you can adjust it to suit your needs in future.

We're all here to learn and getting the relevant information will help us all.

Kind regards,
Robin

Some general comments to your approach:

There are syntax errors in it:
Code:
awk -F\| 'NR=FNR{a[$2}=$2,next}a[$2]!=$2{print "Different"}' file1 file2
            ^        ^   ^--- must be a ;
            |        |---  must be a ]
            |--- must be ==

as well as logical flaws:
Code:
awk -F\| 'NR=FNR{a[$2}=$2,next}a[$2]!=$2{print "Different"}' file1 file2
                    ^ ^--- as $2 is always 1, there will always be a match
                    |--- shouldn't that be NR, and the second reference's index FNR?

Try to eliminate those, and we'll discuss further.
