RedHat New account blues !

hi ..

I tried to create a new account with useradd leghorn (being in root)

Also I gave a password for the same using passwd leghorn.

So when I go su legorn, it doesnt prompt for the password.

Kindly drop in your valuable comments

If you su from root to another account, you won't be prompted for a password.

Could you help me on that as well ?

Some daemons must run as root you know ( you can be sure all the one using ports under 1000 for a start...) Maybe if you explained a bit more what you are trying we may be of more help ... what do you call in user mode? (interactive???)

ok .. I want to run ntpd , stunnel, etc in user mode ..

By user I mean , I have created a user say xyz using adduser. Now if I run ntpd (or any other 3rd party daemon of my wish) it should run in that user and not in the root.
As in if I ps -eaf |grep ntpd .. it should give me xyz as the user and not root

But as said preciously some daemons only run as root for they need high privileges to work correctly: ntpd can change system time, who else except root can do that?
Doing an su as root to an account is enough to launch anything with the new user's ID since after su you have now a new shell with that user's ID... till you exit...

point taken !

also note that for stunnel ,there is a file called stunnel.conf , wherein there are parameters like setuid and setgid .. where in if u specify the users, and compile the binaries to take .conf file , IT WORKS !!
Smilie
there has to be a way for ntpd as well
