UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Before you bark "Google" or some other reference, I have tried to get my head around this for the past 8 months.

I want to know, who makes a vanilla UNIX. Not a flavour of UNIX.


.....vanilla, plain, boring, original current UNIX.



I understand that all these different companies make versions or "flavours" of UNIX, but where is the AT&T/Bell Labs version of UNIX?

I'm not trying to develop my own version or anything, but where does the modern day version come from? The last time I asked this question, I was told that BSD UNIX or SOLARIS are the only current vanilla flavours, but I can't find BSD UNIX. I can find FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD FireflyBSD.

Can anyone give me a dumb persons answer so I can just have peace of mind please.

That question used to make sense decades ago but not any more. Unix is now merely a set of standards. There is no more a vanilla Unix. There used to be two branches that would qualify, AT&T and BSDs.

Last vanilla code was AT&T SVR4 from which the mainstream OSes Solaris, AIX and HP-UX were developed.

Not anymore at AT&T, SCO acquired SVR4.2 from Novell but didn't produced anything that was released, as far as I know, they abandoned SVR6 a decade ago.

The original research group responsible for BSD development, the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) at the University of California, Berkeley, was shut down in the mid 1990s. The origin of all extant *BSD projects is a CSRG release named Net/2, which consists of the unencumbered portions of the 4.3BSD-Reno release and unencumbered replacements for ATT's utilities.
