How to protect directory var/www in debian?

i need somme help to protect directory in debian with user and pass

var/www

Are you root on the server?
What are you trying to achieve?
UNIX permissions are all you have standard or are you using some special software?

i have somme file in var/www
and i need to add security user and pass when i use page http://dyndns/var/www
how to protect it

That means not accessing your server via login but by HTTP...
You have to look at configuring htaccess in your http server

what should be the permissions of the folder var/www in my ubuntu ? I need it to be safe and at the same time I need ftp users to be able to edit it.
