UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello:
I'm new to unix and need to know if my unix server has the network configuration configured correctly. I need to add a gateway and don't know how to. Any help.

You don't say what version of Unix you have, but all I know of support the command ifconfig for setting up network interfaces. Do a man ifconfig and see what options you need to use.

There are probably networking files in /etc that contain this information so you don't need to use ifconfig to set it up after each boot. In Solaris, for example, you would use /etc/defaultrouter to set the gateway address. Again, depends on which version you have but you can probably figure it out from the man pages. Check the "files" section of the man output for ifconfig, it will probably list the correct files you need to edit there.

The version I have is SCO 8.2.3. The unix servers have a class c address. I want to be able to access them from a class b IP from within the LAN. Thanks

I want to add a gateway to my unix box that has a class c ip address. The gateway I want to add is a class b so I could access the unix box. Any help.

You need to add a route to that other network. But you have a gateway such as a router or a machine with 2 network cards in your class c network that can reach that class b network.

How would I add a gateway address to a unix box. Like I stated before I'm new to unix and the company involved me on working with the unix servers. Any help.
