sms to handphone using unix server

Hi Guys,
have anyone tried sending a sms(short messaging) to handphone using unix server?? I would appreciate if anyone can tell me what is/are required to perform such a task.

See linux apps for SMS and sms_biff for information on SMS and UNIX.

If you are strict on "SMS", you would need either a modem or find the vendor's internet gateway to SMS. A couple for protocols exists and so are corresponding software applications.

If you are not strict on "SMS" but would send any (yet short) text message to cell phone over a reliable (yet not HA) service, then e-mail to the phone is a good alternation. Mobile service caompany now provide e-mail to all most all cell phones, such as <phone_number>@<mobile_company>.com

simple text doesnt work

hey tom ...

the simple procedure u told (mobilenumber@serviceprovider.com) is not working. I have already tried it with airtel and ideacellular. :-(

Is there some other way to that?

and u were telling something about using modems.. can u pls elaborate on that as well ...

Since you mention Airtel and Idea Cellular, I take it that you are based out of India. See this link for the general pattern of email addresses for the different service providers in India.

For idea I tried.

The format is

mailx cell_number@ideacellular.net

Tom,
you mentioned that "A couple for protocols exists and so are corresponding software applications. " Can you please specify the protocols and if there is any software application, please do let me know. We are in real need to do give this functionality to all our 500 field staff who are mostly out of office during the day.
