Where to set the LANG variable

When I login to my AIX server, the LANG variable is automatically being set to En_US. This is causing locale warning messages when I run emacs or perl. The reason seems to be that En_US is not a valid locale (seen by running locale -a).

I can change the variable from the command line (export LANG=EN_US) but want to change it permanently on startup. However, I can't find where to do this. It isn't in /etc/profile, nor in my own .profile or .kshrc. In fact, if I try to put it into my own .profile or .kshrc I can't log in any more.

Can anyone tell me where I should make this change.

Thanks.

Smilie I put it in my .profile if it is just for myself, and /etc/profile if it is for all users.

I've added to my .profile
export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

For AIX: man chlang
