Actually, it could be used to substitute John for Mark only in lines that contain <pattern> and not every instance of John.

but its only a hypothetical....


Say for instance you were quoting the Bible... but referenced the wrong book. You could grep for "Chapter"...if you could guarantee they were always on the same line.

.... and without the UUOG [G - for 'grep']

sed '/<pattern>/s/John/Mark/g' file.in > file.out

If you dont want to redirect to a file and rename it later, you can use PIE

perl -p -i.bak -e "s/John/Mark/g" filename

It will create a file filename.bak with the original content, in case of any problem
