Question format fat partition in unix

I got a FAT partition mounted as /mnt, as I believed you only can mount partitions when they are formated, but when I want to copy a file to the /mnt partition I only get errors...should I format it or do I have to change settings?

I only can work through the "WebMin" (a GREAT TOOL!) cause I'm at work now ... Smilie

Thanks people ...

What error are you getting? If you are on a Unix filesystem, trying to copy a file to a mounted FAT device, you may need to use a special tool, such as the mtools group. For example, if you want to copy a DOS formatted file to a DOS floppy, you will need to use mtools... If you're putting a Unix file on a DOS floppy, you may run into problems...

Try pasting the logs here, and I'll be glad to see if I can help.

thanks

I'll keep mtools in mind, but the error I got via WebMin was a result of copying a user file and changing the owner and group into root... but the file did get copied ... :-)
thanks for the help
