Bug == vs -eq and functions

Hey I have a question....

what is the difference between using == vs -eq when testing in WHILE loops.
I use the following test that only worked with == signs....

if [ "$coin_inserted" == "D" -o "$coin_inserted" == "d" ]

why do i need == and not -eq?

2. I need to re-use some code in a couple places in this script. is functions my best option?

tks for help

string vs. numeric

== is used when doing string comparison, and -eq is used for numeric comparisons. I typically add a function if something complex is being repeated, or the number of script statement repeats is numerous, such as a return code check. HTH Smilie

It also depends on which shell you are using. If you tell us the particular shell you are using, we can be more precise in our answers

For strings:

string1 == string2
True if the strings are equal.

For numbers:
Code:
A=10

if (( A == 10 ))
then
    echo "true"
fi
if [[ A -eq 10 ]]
then
    echo "true too"
fi
if [[ $A == 10 ]]
then
    echo "true also"
fi
