XWindow problems

ok, i've got a FreeBSD box, and it doesn't like my monitor. At all. The first time i installed BSD, it wouldn't write the changes. I reformated and reinstalled, and this time it would write, but when i went to load the x server with startx it would go through the load process, but say "no screens" after I had double checked all the configurations.

Now, the monitor is circa 1993, but i figured that wouldn't be a problem, it works fine when i'm running windows on the same computer, even if it is squashed onto 640x480 resolution.

Now what settings do i have to change to get it to work?

do you have your screen section in the XF86Config file?

Code:
Section "Screen"
  DefaultDepth 16
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 15
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1280x1024"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 32
 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  Device "Device[0]"
  Identifier "Screen[0]"
  Monitor "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

Have you gone through the process as outlined in the FreeBSD Handbook for setting up X?

The process is outlined here and is the process that I use on my FreeBSD machines.

I find running XFree86 -configure to be purt near handy in getting a base configuration.

ran throuhg all of that, now it says "no device found"

this is really ticking me off, but I think i found out how to fix that.

The device=the video card, right? that's what i found on another website.

This may sound stupid. But what version of FreeBSD?

May have something to do with the version of X it's running. An upgrade of X may solve your problem Smilie

Sometimes it's the simple thing people forget and they are the answer.
