hidden files

I usually use
Code:
 ls -al | awk '{sum = sum + $5} END {print sum}'

to sum the size of all files in a directory. However this command includes the hidden files.

Is there a command to just add up all the files/sub-directories excluding the hidden files (begins with . and ..)

I wanted to check the file size within the directory including subdirectories.

If you want to check the size of current directory incluing files and subdirectories in it, then best option is to use
Code:
du .

A hidden file has a filename like .filename They are not hidden, they just got that name because because ls will only display them when
Code:
ls -a

i tried ls -l | awk '{sum = sum + $5} END {print sum}'. It worked if all are files under the directory. However if there are subdirectories, the sum is not correct.

directory: A
under directory A, there are 4 files and 1 directory B
Under dirctory B, there are 2 files.

pls advise

also why I got the "." ".." when I did ls -a. What are those periods? Sorry i do not get those files

. .. file1 file2
