Question OFS in awk

Hi,
I have these out put field seperator changed to "|" in my awk command, but it didn't give me the result.
Can someone help me find out why?

=======================================
/bin/awk 'BEGIN { OFS="|" } { print $0 }' list.tmp.$$ > listtmp.$$

=======================================

Thank you very much!!

OFS is only applied when there is a comma in the print statement.

try something like:
Code:
/bin/awk 'BEGIN { OFS="|" }
              { print $1,$2,$3,$4,$5,$6,$7,$8} ' list.tmp.$$ > listtmp.$$

There have to be as many varaibles as the maximum possible number of fields. If a field doesn't exist and you try to print it anyway nothing happens.

FWIW -
tr would do this nicely.
Code:
 cat list.tmp$$ | tr -s ' '  '|'   > listtmp.$$
