HP-UX printer setup

Hi, not entirely sure if this should be here or IP networking for dummies...

I am trying to set up a new printer remotely (large office). The people at the other end have no problems printing to it from a Microsoft environment (Word, Excel, etc). However, they are unable to print to it from Unix (HP). The print job gets in the queue and sits there forever. Following the information I have managed to collect for the printer:

Printer model: HP DeskJet 5850
Connection: Stand-alone
IP: 192.168.105.51
Print server: JetDirect box
Print queue name: jwes_lp1

All I have done so far (as far I know this is all that needs to be done) is append the /etc/hosts file with the IP and print queue name and also in sam. It is worth noting that I have been unable to telnet to the printer, with the error 'connection refused'.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, Ypnos:

Test the connection between the printer and the Unix server using the ping command. Also use sam to check the status of the printer.

Don't forget to post your findings.

Hello plus_marca

I can ping the printer's IP address, no problem. And here are the sam results:

-------------------------- Enabled ----- Accepting
Name --------- Type ---- To Print----- Requests ---- Location

jwes_lp1------remote---yes, busy ------ yes -------jwes_lp1 on jwes_pc

Ah ok, problem solved.

Turns out they previously had it plugged into a PC (LPT1) and they expected to plug it directly into the network and expected it to work. However they forgot there would be no 3rd party software so the printer was still configured for port 9100 which is (I believe) is the default port for an LPT port!
