How to find the disk space allocated.

Hello,

I need to find the total allocated disk space for the home directory.

How can i find that in unix?(in GB).

Thanks.

Hi.

If the home directory, say /home, is a filesystem (mount point), then you could use df. If it's only a directory, then use du.

The commands might vary from "UNIX" to "UNIX".

On AIX, it would be:
Code:
df -g /home
du -sg /home

On Solaris, you might be out of luck, but try:

Code:
df -h /home
du -sh /home

(the same for Linux)

Otherwise, on Solaris, you will only get the size in K, and you need to do some arithmetic on it.

On HP-UX, I don't know what the options of du and df might be.

Code:
du -hs /home
1.0K /home

du by default displays all directories and subdirectories recursively, and displays a number of bytes. The -s option tells it to only display the total for the outer directory, and the -h option puts it in human readable format (ie 1.0K instead of 1000).

The command you may be looking for in HP-UX is:

Code:
bdf /home

The output format from "bdf" is similar to that from old unix "df -k". The output format from HP-UX "df -k" is and acquired taste.
