help with multiple files rename...

Hi everyone,
I'm very green in Linux.
Please help me to solve my problem.
I have thousands of files and I want to change their names.
They have naming convection: prefix_date_date+1_suffix.nc
prefix: ext-GLORY
date_date+1: 20020101_20020102
and two types of suffix: gridV_R20020130 and gridU_R200020130
therefore, one of the file name is
ext-GLORY_20020101_20020102_gridV_R20020130.nc

What I want to do is make the name simple as
ext-GLORY_2002001_gridV.nc
I want to remove some numbers (20020102) in middle of name and also want to remove the last part of suffix (R20020130).

How can I do this?

Code:
echo "ext-GLORY_20020101_20020102_gridV_R20020130.nc " |awk -F[_\.] '{print $1"_"$2"_$5"."$NF}'

So if you need change all files by script, you can run:

Code:
for file in `ls ext-GLORY*`
do
   newfile=`echo $file|awk -F[_\.] '{print $1"_"$2"_"$4"."$NF}'`
echo "will rename file $file to new name: $newfile"
   mv $file $newfile
done

You can comment the mv command first, until the echo command is correct.
