UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello folks,

I am running FreBSD Unix 5.1 and I installed Samba 3.0.0 using instructions on this page http://www.kempston.net/solaris/samba.html

(I only worked through points 1 to 3)

It seemed to install OK but the smbd and nmbd daemons would not run because for some reason the installation did not create an smb.conf file. I ran 'testparm', found out where it expected the smb.conf file to be and manually created one there.

The daemons did execute after that but when I looked at the status through SWAT, although the nmbd daemon was running the smbd daemon was not. I ran the smbstatus command on my unix box it said:

'sessionid.tdb not initialised'

Does anyone know what the problem is? Did I install it incorrectly?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've not seen this behavior before, but found someone who had. He fixed this by resetting the group and world permissions to allow read and execute access for the directory/usr/local/samba/var (or equivalent given your installation path). Apparently, during installation, access permissions for this directory were apparently restricted to root only.

On my system it is /usr/local/samba/var, and it seemed to have appropriate permissions. However, just in case I gave everyone rwx permissions but it did'nt make any difference. In that directory there are a number of .tdb files but sessionid.tdb is'nt there so maybe it was'nt installed in the first place- I've tried re-installing but it has'nt made any difference.

Hello folks, I have found the solution and I thought it would be useful to post it just in case anyone else was having problems (sorry for the bump-up).

The sessionid.tdb file was actually in the /var/lock directory. I copied it to the samba installation directory which is /usr/local/samba/var/locks. After I did this the 'smbstatus' command executed without any error messages.

However, I could not use the 'smbclient -L servername' command because no accounts had been added to the smbpasswd file. Once I added my account everything seemed to work normally and I could access the UNIX shares from my Windows 2000 PC.

The only explanation I can think of for this is that the installation did not install some files (or at least a default smb.conf file) and placed others in the wrong directory; maybe its because I am using FreeBSD 5.1 which is not a stable production release.
