UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

i wanna ask that is there a software available for unix to install different files... e.g. when we install a file in windows the installation wizard runs and guides us through the process... if so plz tell... and guide thnx!

some software (e.g. oracle) comes with an installer... most software comes in packages. these packages are installed with the proper tool which is different on most unix/linux systems... but thats how it works. you can't compare the incomparable (windows <-> UNIX)!

Which Unix distribution are you using?

thnx fro reply... im not using any unix... never have I used any... im doing internship at a firm and the manager has given me a task to find this out... please help me in this regard... tell me linux or any that u know and plz elaborate it for me so i can understand... thnx

Linux has several different installation mechanisms, it will depend on your precise distribution.
Solaris uses the solaris package format (.pkg files)
AIX uses .rpm and it's own package format as well (from memory)
You can also often get tools to allow the use of a different Unix's packages provided the underlying architecture is the same.

You should pin your manager down to telling you what Unix in particular they are looking at.

Honestly, it's a very broad question that doesn't have a very valuable answer - probably the answer your manager actually wants is a simple 'Yes, most unix style operating systems support packaged installations'.
