Take a piece of paper and write down 5 reasons why you want a career in Unix.

When I first started out as sysops, my first box was an old nec box running sco 3.2, my boss told us never to mess with it but I couldn't keep away, It was our company departmental store live merchant system used to tally all the live transactions coming in from sales floor cash registers, I started to fiddle with it try this command try that and even stayed up late reading the thick manuals trying to understand.

The point I'm making here is that you have to like this, you have to be passionate about it have desire of it like you desire your girlfriend & spend your time fussing over it.

if you like it for the money then better forget it, choose another career because you will not last. If you desire it, knock enough doors & eventually opportunities will come doors will open.

Money doesn't even make it in the first 10 reasons for me - it's a benefit to all of the Other Stuff(tm). Smilie

All such negative responses.
You must love technology! You must be willing to put in the effort and discipline to learn.
Pay is not bad for the experienced. Start from the ground up. Learn C. Read Tannenbaum (design of the Unix operating system). Read Stevens (Adv. Unix Programming). Learn TCP/IP. Learn Linux!! Proprietary operating systems will not last. Learn how to build embedded Linux systems; appliances are the next hot thing. Virtualization is hot, learn Qemu, Xen, KVM (kernel virtual machine), (of course vmware too). Follow with high-level languages such as java, ruby, python. Of course scripting languages will always be changing, so who knows where java, ruby or python will be in ten years. Stay up to date. The computer technology changes by the hour; it's important to continue learning.

oooh yeah I heard that already 20 years ago - and here we are ... still with the same proprietary operating systems ... probably more distributed than ever before.

First of all - what would you like to do - become a sysadmin - than you might want to learn shell scripting, c / c++ / perl and you need to learn about hardware and networking - or do you want to become an application developer - than java and ruby and all this is maybe the way to go.

Do you have alrady any knowledge in Unix / Linux ? Get a cheap old unix box and just 'do' Unix. If it'a a proprietary one, get the free books from the vendors that show you step by step what to do ... install it - mess it up - try to fix the problems ... basically that's it.

Kind regards
