Question Insert Field into a tab-delimited file
Hello,

I have about 100 files in a directory with fields which are tab delimited. I would like to append the file name as the first field and it has to be done as many times as the total lines in the file.

For example,

myFile1.txt has the following data:

1 x y z
2 a b c
3 d e f
...
...
...
...
10 p q r


I want the output to be:

myFile1.txt 1 x y z
myFile1.txt 2 a b c
myFile1.txt 3 d e f
...
...
...
...
myFile1.txt 10 p q r

Well the grep command will prepend the filename (and a colon) when reporting results from multiple files. So you could just get grep to select every line for you:

grep ^ *.txt

# 3

use ed in a for loop
try this..
for i in $(ls);do
(echo "1,$ s:^:${i}<insert a tab>:g";echo "w";echo "q") | ed -s ${i}
done

this will open each file in the current dir, then from top to bottom of the file insert
filename<tab> write the file and quit, and move to the next.
# 5

simple awk can do...
Code:
awk '{print FILENAME"   "$0}' anyfile

# 6

for fname in * ; do
   sed "s/^/$fname\t/" ${fname} > "${fname}.cpy"
done

Change all the files in current dir.
If required, change the first line to
Code:
for fname in myfile*.txt; do
