Tools 553 config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem)

I recieve 553 5.3.4 mail.xxxx.com config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?) when I try to send email from client . The message reaches the server and dies there

I'm using sendmail 8.12.9 on OpenBSD 3.3. I can check mail on client with no problem

Thanks for any help

If I remember correctly (solved this problem so many times in the past).... one thing to insure is that your host and/or domain is properly listed in the sendmail.cw file (often found in /etc/sendmail.cw ) Then again, I'm doing this from the top of my head and could be all wet!

i use postfix, but look in your config for an option whether to deliver mail directly, and make sure that it is set to do so; however there are a number of other situations that will also cause you to recieve this error. look at www.sendmail.org , the website contains many useful links, try a search at the bottom of the page for error 553 .

edit:

just saw neo's post, and i will add that i could be wrong Smilie

* I'm getting "Local configuration error" messages, such as:

553 MX list for domain.net points back to relay.domain.net
554 <user@domain.net>... Local configuration error

How can I solve this problem?

You have asked mail to the domain (e.g., domain.net) to be forwarded to a specific
host (in this case, relay.domain.net) by using an MX record, but the relay machine
doesn't recognize itself as domain.net. Add domain.net to /etc/sendmail.cw (if you
are using FEATURE(use_cw_file)) or add "Cw domain.net" to your configuration file.

Thanks,
Couldn't find /etc/sendmail.cw its now /etc/mail/local-host-names in vesrion 8.12.9 and OpenBSD 3.3 doesn't use the sendmail.mc or it deleled it after the install since its bundled. Anyway I just edited then sendmail.cf using pico and chamed the line Cwlocalhost to Cw domain.com and it worked. Also I had to to change rc.conf and remove the -C (filename) option.

But it works fine now

thanks again

Glad things worked out.

Sendmail MC files are great to use, BTW, for things like FEATURE(use_cw_file). See:

http://www.sendmail.org/virtual-hosting.html

for a few examples on using this configuration feature. If you receive mail for multiple domains, you will like using the cw file.
