ways to open a file
How many ways are there to open a file in unix?

wha i know is mentioned below

suppose if xx is a filename, then

1) cat xx
2) more xx
3) view xx
4) less xx

I heard there are seven ways to open a file. If so, can anyone tell me all the ways to open a file and correct me the above ways.

I think there are more than 7 ways to view a file. And 'less' isn't (as far as I know) a standard UNIX tool (HP-UX at least is missing it by default) but GNU software.
But you can add this to your list: dd if=xx

there are different editors which can be used to open file like vi, emac etc

if i execute dd if=xx, it displays the output and in the last, it displays the following message

0+1 records in
0+1 records out

Can any one throw some light on this?

Before I delete any file in Unix, How can I check no open file handle is pointing to that file?

I know how to check if any file has a unix process using a file by looking at 'lsof <fullpath/filename>' command. I think using lsof is very expensive.
