UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hey,

I have a problem with nslookup under the newly installed mandrake 9.1, and as I see now also under Redhat 8.0

I have a pc called evo with the ip 10.0.0.1 which entered correctly in the /etc/hosts file. Connection to the internet is via an adsl-router. I have the nameservers from my provider in the /etc/resolv.conf file.

The name resolution via dns is working fine, but I cann't receive the ip for my pc, not with the name evo, localhost or ip-adress.

The files /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/hosts.conf are configured to use first files and then use dns/bind.

Has anybody seen this and does know a solution?

on your redhat machine, type ifconfig eth0
what are your netmask, broadcast and IP settings? Type in route and check your default gateway address. What is that set to? I think that your address 10.0.0.1 should be your gateway and not the IP address of your PC.

hey google,

the redhat-box is the router. on one interface is the network which the adsl-modem is connected with a ppp0 and the official ip on it. the second interface has 10.0.0.2/255.255.255.0 for my internal network.

route shows the default route to a gw at my provider.


on the client, which is running mandrake, the default gw is 10.0.0.2 which is the interface on the router. the setting of the interface is 10.0.0.1 with netmask 255.255.255.0.

Communication within my network and from/to the provider is working perfectly. The only problem is the name-resolution for files.
