This is not a coincidence, in fact what you're describing makes perfect sense. I've had the same issue the other day where I deleted a 600MB apache log (don't ask), but the df was still showing an almost full f/s. Restarting Apache fixed the df statistic. Basically, it turns out that if you delete a file that's open by a process, the open file descriptor is still in place and as far as the filesystem is concerned, the space is still being used.
