How to disable the visibility of the password character in the screen

in a shell script or from the command line:

echo "Password:\c"
stty -echo
read password
stty echo

read -s -p "Password: " mypassword

or

Code:

oldmodes=`stty -g` 
stty -echo 
read "Password:" password 
stty $oldmodes

This restores modes to what they were before reading the password, rather
than turning on echoing unconditionally.
