Question COMPLETELY new to UNIX

So I am ridiculously new to UNIX. The closest thing to it I use is Mac OS X. Recently I downloaded OpenDarwin 7.2.1 just to see what it was like. I popped it into Vmware, installation and boot work well, and I login.
Now I am presented with a console. I'm generally okay with command line stuff, but I'd like a GUI and have no idea how to go about getting one, and after googling all I gather is that I need to download MacPorts and then whatever WM I like (GNOME or KDE, maybe?). The problem is that I don't know how to download these files with only a terminal. From what I've been reading, it looks similar to the Linux method but every time I follow the instructions on the websites I have visited, I get either a "step 1: install macports" or a get command for a file that no longer exists or something that I don't understand. Any help?
