i am new at unix and am VERY confused about the compression processes. what progs do i need to unzip and zip files? there must be a standard one similar to winzip?

yeap, it is... quite numbers of program similiar to MS like zip programs in Unix too.. ( not too similar actually, its just that you need to get familiar than thats all you on the track.. )
