I got an question about changing timezone thrue command line on a SunOS Release 4.1.2 without restarting the computer.

Now it's set on WET and I want to set the timezone to CET (GMT +1)

Plz somebody help me.

When your box says $TZ is "WET +5" (yours could be diffrent then +5):

1) There is a line in /etc/default/init that says:

TZ=WET +5

2) There is a *file* in /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo named "WET+5":

% ls -l /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo/GMT+5
-rw-r--r-- 2 root bin 58 Jan 8 2000 /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo/GMT+5

This file was created by:

# cd /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo
# zic src/etcetera
# zic src/backward

The zoneinfo source files (in src/) are ascii text, format defined
by the zic(1M) man page.

I'm guessing you're in Westtern Europe. Probably
what you really want is to change your /etc/default/init entry
to:

TZ=Europe/Belgrade

(Check your local timezone and configure the same)

reboot your system.

NOTE: Depending on who installed your machines, you may not have a /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo/Europe/Belgrade file. Check first, and if the file is not there:

# cd /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo
# zic src/europe

This is completely safe. Once the zone files are there, you can play with them

% echo $TZ

US/Pacific
% date
Wed Jul 4 09:58:30 PDT 2002
% TZ=Asia/Calcutta
% export TZ
% date
Wed Jul 4 22:28:36 IST 2002
% TZ=Australia/Tasmania
% date
Thu Jul 5 03:00:08 EST 2002

Once you're satisfied, make your change to /etc/default/init and reboot..
Post back if this doesnt help.

Whoa, careful here. SunOS 4.x was based on BSD. SunOS 5.0 was a complete rewrite and is based on System V Release 4. The timezone stuff may be completely different. I no longer have access to a box running such an old version of SunOS. Nor do I remember how it handled Timezones. But I don't want the OP to freak out if he can't find the files you mentioned.

Does anyone know for sure how old versions of SunOS handled Timezones?

I agree to daemons answer, the structure is not exactly as u describe killerserv. There are things that are different as daemon says.

1. I don't have this line

"/etc/default/init "

2. I got this
"/usr/share/lib/zoneinfo"

But tnx anyway.

One important thing is that I can't reboot the system, I am afraid it will never startup again.

Could be my mistake. But neway isnt that suppose all the Sun based architectures or solaris structure/features the same..? Might be mine outdated. Neway check the site that thehoghunter suggested, found its intresting.
