errors compiling gcc 4.2.1 - UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello, I have never had a successful compile on the 2.6 kernel. On every arch in which I try to compile gcc I get either "i686-pc-cygwin-ar command not found or "i686-suse-linux-ar command not found. This always happens during the make process after configure checks for ar and finds it's just ar. What error am I to correct here? I don't know if configure finishes incorrectly or this is a problem with make.

Have you tried adding the location of 'ar' to your path? It is normally found in /usr/ccs/bin.
I had simular problems and this fixed it for me.

I have tried --with-gnu-ar and have tried prepending the arch prefix as well to read i686-pc-cygwin-ar when it looks for it but that doesn't even work.
