grep -f command

Dear guys,
I have a file, let it be FILE1, and i want to grep some patterns from it, and the patterns are located in another file, FILE2, so i used the command:
grep -f FILE2 FILE1
but it seems it's not acceptable by the shell, as it don't recognize the -f option.
so, am i doing something wrong?
thanks for support
Marwan
