/usr/openwin/bin/xterm &
of this does not work correctly, you may need to substitue the ipaddress of solar instead of the name.

straight in Putty? like so...

solar > setenv DISPLAY solar:2 /usr/openwin/bin/xterm &
[1] 18130
setenv: Too many arguments.
