A few questions...

I'm new to this UNIX world !
I login to a remote server (UNIX [HP-UX]) from an XP machine..

Let's say I need to download a window manager, I've decided upon wmaker ..
But how do I go about it?
How do I connect to the internet from my remote Unix X-Term terminal?

And how do i install it?

OR

Lets say I have the TAR package downloaded in my HDD ..
How will I see the HDD data from Unix terminal??

PS : These questions may sound n00bish, but make no mistake, i AM a n00b!

No need to bump (in fact I think it's against the rules). Not everyone is on Bangalore time

Why do you want a window manager on HP? I believe (though I'm not sure) it probably already has one installed. Most non-linux systems have CDE installed and available.

Generally you'd use a remote _server_ to serve apps like apache or sendmail (or postfix/qmail/etc...) and you wouldn't need or want a window manager in that case.

A third problem would be getting the output of the window manager back to your XP box. It's not impossible but you'd need an X window server on your windows box. Then once you got your window manager started (CDE, wmaker, etc) you'd export the display to your system. For that to work you'd need to have your X window ports open between the HP box and your system (don't know how remote that is and if there are firewalls between you).

If you're able to connect to it remotely, you should be able to then ssh, ftp, trn, or use lynx to web browse out depending on what you're trying to connect to. If you can't, post the error and someone will try to troubleshoot for you.

Generally there's a README file you should read first and then an INSTALL file you read to see how to INSTALL. There may be other docs and such but those are the two standard files to look for.

You mean the tar file is on your XP box? If so, just scp the file to the Unix box and work from there.

Remember that most folks here do have other tasks. If we're busy on something else work related, we may not get to your question until later. Generally folks who answer questions are familiar with the tasks. If the question doesn't have enough information or seems complicated or confused, the person may delay answering leaving it to someone else and then adding their comments. It depends on how busy they are. I'm in the middle of adding a new user and it's a lengthy task (lots of waiting on each system) so I have extra time to provide a detailed response and ask more questions.

Good luck and welcome.

Carl
