Line Count & MAil Issues

Please help...I forgot how to do a linecount in Solaris. I'm list a report & I'm trying to count how many instances.

Also, I need to read & clean up mail for root. What directory is that again.

instances? instances of what?
line count: 'wc -l < myFile'

/var/mail/root doesn't have anything in there, but I keep getting the "you have mail" message everytime I log in ....Is there any other place I can check..

don't kno about sun , but check /var/adm/mail
