trouble mounting

What is the possible cause for the mount command to take ages? im trying to mount remotely : "mount -t nfs xx.x.x.x:/export/xyz/cdrom-4.0 /mnt/cdrom" on a system using bash. Im able to ping the remote server, but the system hangs or takes about half an hour to carry out this mount command....

How far away is the remote server?
What happens if you mount a remote directory vs a remote cd?
Is the cd already mounted or does the remote system need to mount the cd first?

(I haven't used NFS much so I'm basically asking what I think are obvious questions.)

Hi,
the remote server is on the same network..in the same area. And its a remote directory which is being mounted not a cd. The directory only points to the dump taken from a cd...
