it's usually one character
IFS=" " (for a space - the default) IFS= (no IFS character) IFS=, (comma)

If you set it to soemthing weird, set it back because it will mess up other parts of the script or commands on the command line

IFS=' ' or IFS=$(echo '\012\001') # Works for me
