what is the purpose of unix?

Not really. DOS is single-tasking, single-user, has no memory protection at all, has no support for networking, and can't stop you from doing anything you please with the hardware.

UNIXes are full-fledged multitasking, multi-user, protected-memory, timesharing operating systems with all the trimmings. Often you use them with a console; window managers for UNIX do exist, and you'll often find them full of console windows. A console's actually an indispensable tool when done right...

Here...

Well if you really really wanna learn I will reiterate it: get" UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD. We use it for corporative training and it is exceptionally deep and easy to follow.
