I have finaly got my toshiba 4600 to operate in full screen when running x. I am running mandrake 8.0 xfree86 4.0.3. I have the xf86config file modified to use a vesa driver instead of the actually trident driver. The problem that I have now is that If Start in init level 5 the screen just flickers and x will not come up but If i go to init level 3 log in and then do a start x command X works fine. I belive that I may have to edit the kdm configuration but I am not sure . Will someone please let me know if that sounds correct or if there is something else I will have to do to get init level 5 to start properly. I f I do have to edit the kdm config where is it and how do I edit it. Please any help would be appreciated .

Hi,
Can you try starting Linux in runlevel 5 then noting the error message in the /var/log/XFree86.x.log file. The kdmrc file is located in /usr/share/config, although I'm not sure that editing this file will solve your problem. Andy H |

I have to log now
Ok i figured out how to get the log I have the log file from start x now and the log file from init 5 the previous error exsists in both file(may be another problem but not whats causing it to now work i think you cna give me your ideas on that if you would like to)
they are identical except for the last few lines as follows(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE)(the one that loads properly stops here) the incorrect files continues as follows FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:-1" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing. (II) Open APM successful (==) VESA(0): Default visual is TrueColor Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting then it ends |

More log info
the log file for the working x contains allthe lines that the unworking log contains it appends them after i leave x the only thing it does say is the Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting statement I dont know if thta was caused by my canceling out of run level 5 and returning to the console. Sorry to keep posting so many threads I am just working onthis problem so I keep getting new developments let me know if you have any idea pleaseit must obviouslt work if i could getinto x |

Hi Gennaro,
Can you try the following: 1 post the XFree86.x.log and xdm-error.log files to this thread. 2 Does typing "kdm" as root from the console in runlevel 3 bring up the kdm login screen? 3 If 2 doesn't work can you try "gdm" as root to see if the gnome display manager will work. I'm not an expert when it comes to x windows problems but I will have a look at your error logs and see what I make of them. Andy H |
