How to protect directory var/www in debian?

i need somme help to protect directory in debian with user and pass

var/www

Are you root on the server?
What are you trying to achieve?
UNIX permissions are all you have standard or are you using some special software?

i have somme file in var/www
and i need to add security user and pass when i use page http://dyndns/var/www
how to protect it

That means not accessing your server via login but by HTTP...
You have to look at configuring htaccess in your http server
