emacs error... help!

i am telnet-ing into my university's UNIX system and trying to edit some perl code in emacs. However any time i try to open it in emacs i get the following error message:

> emacs project1.cgi
Error: Couldn't find per display information
>

i also cannot create any new documents in emacs and get this same message when i try. I am a UNIX newbie and dont have much of a clue how to fix this. I would really appreciate any suggestions. thanks, jeff

Sound like you are attempting to run a graphical front end to EMACS and not a command line version. Is that right?

We can help you if you tell us exactly that you are trying to run. EMACS can run in ASCII mode that does not require an EMACS-GUI or in a mode that uses an EMAC-GUI. What are you using?

Patience is our mantra. We help all who are willing to help themselves

Could you post the results of these two commands:

> uname -a

> env

Thanks.

vt100 etv

there are some variable in the enveriment (i only had one time troubles with it). so why not try to type this EXPORT term=vt100 (or any other terminal you use (vt100 is default by m$ telnet).
