negative UID/GID?!! I can see 'em but what the hell do they mean?!

Some versions of Unix allow negative UID's. For example, HP-UX assigns -2 to the nobody user. On HP-UX -2 is the smallest allowed value. Not sure about other systems, although Linux does not appear to use negative UIDs. Check the man page for details, but in general there is no consistent special significance to any UID (except 0).

Thanks mate, it was -2. It's just that every article I've read states that the UID/GID must be a non-negative number so it completely threw me when I saw it!
