Use the Search function and look for performance tuning - quite a few threads on the subject already - like Speed it up and Performance tuning. If you run the search, you will see that performace tuning also has to do with what your server is running - there are different parameters to increase or decrease according to the service you are attempting to run (web, database, mail,...)
