Help Me Set Up MySQL Setting called "big tables"

Friends,

I'm a Unix/Linux Newbie and I do need some HOWTO help with my dedicated server: Linux Redhat 7, EnsimPRo 3.5 control panel

== It's about MySQL setting called "big tables" ==

I have a problem with MySQL when importing large category tree textfiles into the database: I have MySQL 3.23.58 installed

To solve this problem, I understand that I need to edit some MySQL file which I've no idea where it's located and how to even access and edit it.

NOTE: I understand that MySQL creates temp tables as it's doing the sorting of results; and there's a MySQL setting called "big tables" that allows for these tables to be larger than it expects.

1. How do I change my server to start up the mysqld daemon with the following paramaters in addition to any it's already starting with?

--big-tables --tmpdir=/usr/local/mysql/temp

2. Change the tmpdir to be some directory with 777 permissions on the "big" filesystem on the server

3. How do I clear these temporary files to free more space?

Somebody please tell me how to perform these steps.

I can login to root in SSH and follow directions from that point onward.

Thanks in advance.
