Try Cygwin which is a unix-like operating system that runs under windows.

There are also a couple of other packages on the market, including

Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp (Now available for free download)

and the MKS Toolkit (Commercial)
http://www.mkstoolkit.com/

Although I'd definitely opt for Cygwin as google suggests - it also comes with a port of the X Windows system....

If you've got the cash, I'd also recommend VMWare (www.vmware.com) - this allows you to run Linux, Solaris (and other Windows instances) within a virtual machine environment. This way you can easily restore to a last-known-good configuration (via snapshots) if you ruin one of the virtual systems. You can also "network" your virtual machines - see the website for more info.

Cheers
ZB

Another option is to down load an ISO image of KNOPPIX linux and burn it to a CD. It will run entirely from the CD and memory. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/

Can I Install UNIX on an old pentium computer

Is it possible to install a full unix operating system on a pentium computer without using an emulator on another operating system.
I know I can ibstall a Linux OS but I want to get a feel as close to the HP UX system as possible.

All I know is the Unix Solaris 8 x86 version, which you can download at Sun.

Runs on my portable.

The difference with the Sparc version is that it's 32 bits kernel mode and that not all the software meant for the Solaris will run on it, because 64 bits kernel might be prequisited.

Is fun to run.

Good luck!
