list contents of the file /etc/passwd and display the line with your login.. what command can I use???

$PROMPT> cat /etc/passwd | grep <user name>

didnt work... I creat etc and the file passwd. and then i run

cat ./ etc/passwd | grep (myusername) doesnt not show anything
help please

cp /etc/passwd ./etc/passwd
cat ./etc/passwd | grep <user name>

should work.

$ cat /etc/passwd # list passwd file (or use a pager, more, less)
$ grep "^`whoami`" /etc/passwd # display line with my login

Smells like homework though!
