Unhappy need help with unix

i am new at unix. i have no clue what is unix is about and i want to start studing unix. i need your help, first if you can tell me what is a best book that i can start with and second how do i program unix programming on my windows xp desktop. which software i need and stuff.
i am sorry i am asking dumb question but i need your help. i read all the forums i am so confuse right new. i really need your help i was going thru all the forum this is the only forums or from you i can get help from.
so i f you can please tell how i can start 1st which book and 2nd the software and how to install it on my windows xp. please. thank you.

What is Unix?
You can learn what UNIX is, and read about the history if your so inclined.

You can read many online books at
http://www.oreilly.com/openbook/

You can install many *nix like apps on your Win XP box using cygwin.
