Unhappy what is the use of Environment variables

what is the actual use of environment variables.
I know only PS1, LOGNAME, PS2 variables
what are the other variables & what is there use

For a real general question like that i would have to point you to a booke store. such as barns & noble.

For example my "Learning the Korn Shell" book by O'reilly has a list of env variables and what not and explanes what each of them are.

it also helps you understand using the ksh envronment.

Try typing:
env
Both my Linux systems at home, and the HP-UX boxes at work will give you a list of your set variables when you type that.
