I need to totally power down my UNIX box, I think the script is
shutdown -y -i5 -g0 I know -i6 is for a clean reboot but I can't remember if -i5 is the power down script..... Can anyone tell me if this is correct. Thanks |

if you have a sun solaris then you are right. On Solaris you can shutdown either with -i 0 or with -i 5, where -i 5 power downs the
whole system ( depends on the hardware I think, saw that it didn't work each time ). On HPUX or AIX you have to use shutdown -h instead, because they don't have the -i parameter in the shutdown command. Maybe you have a look into the man-pages for shutdown and init on your system ( If you see some strange things on the shutdown-manpage try "man 1M shutdown" ... there is a manpage for a systemcall in section 2 ) |

I'm 99.9% sure it's init 5 but it's always good to get confirmation from somebody else....

When we do a system reset on Redhat we use :
init 6 - Power down and restart init 0 - Power down and stop hope this helps..
